Exactly half of a 1/4 tsp. as shown in the picture if you're using hot chili powder.

 

You can substitute this with one medium mild green chili or one small mild red chili. Just chop it up finely and add in with the onions, ginger and garlic.

 

The amount of chili you use is personal preference. Some like it hot and some like it mild. The taste of dish is not the same without chili.
